2 Vedic Maths Multiplication Tricks You Can Use Today

5 min readLast updated: 2 July 2026By Viva Technologies

Vedic Maths gets a lot of hype, so let's cut straight to it: here are two genuine, correct tricks you can start using in the next five minutes — no course required to try these two.

What Is Vedic Maths?

Vedic Maths is a collection of calculation techniques, traditionally organised into 16 "sutras" (formulas), each suited to a specific type of problem — multiplying numbers near a base like 100, squaring numbers with certain patterns, and more. It isn't a replacement for standard arithmetic; it's a toolbox of shortcuts you reach for when a number matches a specific pattern.

Trick 1: Multiply Any 2-Digit Number by 11

For any 2-digit number, split it into its two digits, add them together, and place that sum in the middle.

Example: 24 × 11
Step 1 — Split: 2 _ 4
Step 2 — Add the digits: 2 + 4 = 6
Step 3 — Place in the middle: 2 6 4
Answer: 264

If the digits add up to 10 or more, carry the extra 1 into the first digit:

Example: 57 × 11
Step 1 — Split: 5 _ 7
Step 2 — Add: 5 + 7 = 12 → write 2, carry 1
Step 3 — Add the carry to the first digit: 5 + 1 = 6
Answer: 627

Trick 2: Square Any Number Ending in 5

Take the first digit (or digits), multiply it by itself-plus-one, then simply write 25 at the end.

Example: 35²
Step 1 — First digit: 3. Multiply by (3+1) = 4 → 3 × 4 = 12
Step 2 — Append 25
Answer: 1225
Example: 65²
Step 1 — First digit: 6. Multiply by (6+1) = 7 → 6 × 7 = 42
Step 2 — Append 25
Answer: 4225

Try it: 85² — pause and work it out using the steps above before checking: 8 × 9 = 72, append 25 → 7225.

There's a Lot More Where That Came From

These two tricks cover exactly two situations: multiplying by 11, and squaring numbers ending in 5. Real speed in exams and daily life comes from having a shortcut ready for many more situations — multiplying numbers close to 100, dividing quickly, subtracting from a base, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Vedic Maths actually faster than normal maths?

For specific patterns like these — multiplying by 11, or squaring numbers ending in 5 — yes, noticeably. Vedic Maths is a set of pattern-based shortcuts for particular situations, not a full replacement for standard arithmetic methods.

Can Vedic Maths help with competitive exams?

Yes. Exams like SSC, banking and railway recruitment tests are timed, and quick calculation tricks directly save time on quantitative aptitude sections.

What age is right to start learning Vedic Maths?

Most students start from around Class 4–5 once basic multiplication tables are comfortable, though older students and working professionals preparing for exams benefit just as much.
